Got a question. I have a 74 250 Scrambler and was wondering what would be the correct tank for this model. Frame dates 11/73. The tank on it looks to be correct as it has the correct graphics, but it is not the watermellon tank, and it's not the same as the MX tank on my 74 1/2 Mint. I've been looking over the pictures in the photo section, but just can't figure out if the tank on the bike is the right one. In the photo section I found a Penton with a KTM engine that had the metal heat shield for the pipe instead of the fiberglass cover. Other than mine tank being red and the one in the pic section blue, the tanks look the same.... at least from what I can tell from the pics. Were there 3 different tanks used in 1974?

Hi Wolfman. The bike has the grenade style silencer on it, with green number backgrounds. The tank graphics appear to be original with the wording "Hare Scrambler 250" on top of the Penton stripe.

My 311 1974 250 Harescrambler has the same small red tank with the same decals and is original as far as I know, and the seat only had Penton on it, but I recovered it in the early 1980's and the cover came with Penton and KTM on it. PS... I had to re-register as my log on info. was evidently lost when the site crashed. Does anyone know if the 1977 MC5 seat is different than the earlier 73-76 version? I have seen several listing for seat covers, but none for 77-78, and I know the 79-81 are different altogether. I am looking for a complete seat as I am putting the 77 together piece by piece. I also bought what was advertised as a 76 400 Enduro pipe hoping that it would fit the 77 frame, but it has a straight tail piece with built in silencer that in the 77 frame angles away from the frame too far to work.

The seat for those early 250s were the same as a 72 jackpiner with penton/ktm on back?rear of cover from factory was rivited,?74-79 gp long mx will work just drill a couple of hole in bottom for the fender and use sheet metal screws for fixing with big washers, the aluminum seat pans had inserts built in but use of sheet screws on even a fiber glass pan will work some brakets changed on the 77 model gp seats,77 gs is different altogetherpan, brakets and foam, early seats for 175-250 front brackets were different also only real difference from 72-73seat breather low seats! hope I helped? And for the guy needing correct pipe I have 7 pipes like you need want to trade me the gs pipe for a good one?you need 76-77 mc5 400 right?your early 250 sound pretty much correct!those are both models that you need to find a june or july 74 dirt rider it shows Carl Cranke on a machine like your in enduro gs trim with him on the front cover saying worlds best 250 check it out?Wolffee!!![8D]

behindbars.. your small tank is correct. You have a late model 73 or early model 74. If you need some photos email me off line and I will send you some. I redone a 73 this spring will be happy to send to you.Later Gary

Wolfman, I have 4 of the 79-81 seats and other than the color of the fiberglass pan; Black or white, they are all the same with the raised rear fender positioning which is vastly different than the 77-78 pictures I have seen on this website and on for sale bikes. My brother has a 78 250 KTM which has the shorter seat, but the fiberglass/plastic pan is broken in several places. The 77-78 looks similar to my 74 seat, but the fender attaches to the bottom of the seat pan on 77-78. It would not be possible to make a 79-81 rear fender fit the earlier seat or to fit the 77-78 fender to a 79-81 seat. If I remember correctly, my 74 seat cover was stapled in place. The 76 400 Enduro pipe I have has a couple of sizeable dents in the headpipe but not by any seams, and a split in the exhaust flange area, but could be easily replaired and otherwise is in very good condition. I need a '77 250 MC-5 pipe for my project. Thanks... [email protected]

454MRW.. You are correct 79-81 seats are different. 76 77 78 MC5 seats are the same. Three holes with threaded inserts in the pan to mount rear finder too.The 74 75 seat pan will work but is not the right one,it puts the rear fender up to high. All of the seat covers that came on my new Pentons were glued on not stapled. If you need a MC5 seat I have one. I have some seat covers for the MC5 made up and I can installed them if needed. I am looking for a GS6 seat or seat pan. Hope this will help. Gary

Iput one of those 76-78 KTM seat covers that the guy out of Portland sells on Ebay for like 26 bucks on my 77 GS6 and it worked fine. The material is a bit stretchy so formed to seat pan/foam well. Glued with rubber contact cement. Will work fine on 77 MC-5.

I assume you are refering to the 73-76 Penton/KTM seat covers from VRM Racing in Portland OR and that they will fit the 77-78 also. I have never seen any covers advertised for 77-78 or 79-81 either. There is an individual that offers a recovering service for $ 60.00 plus shipping for any year seat and he claims that he can recover my 79-81 seats, but I will try to get the seat that Gary Ellis has offered and have Gary put the cover on. Does anyone know of availability of 79-81 KTM covers?
