Rear wheel clearance

Hey Guys,

Would someone measure the distance from the center of the rear axle vertically to the underside of the horizontal section of frame under the seat? I have made this measurement on my 1972 low breather frame, my stock 1973 Hare Scrambler frame and my 1974.5 Piner frame and they are all different from 15.625" to 17". The Piner has the "200" Ceriani forks, so I would expect the rear wheel distance to be a little more. Another reason for my differences is because I am using a 1974.5 swingarm on the 1972 frame to get the conical hub. Also, my shock lengths are all over the map because I have been attaching the shocks to the hole over the axle and to the "vintage" frame hole to get more shock travel but stay within the 4" AHRMA limit.

I have a feeling that around 16" is correct for the axle to under frame distance. Actually, there probably is a "correct" distance for each of these three frames. I know that many guys increased this distance on the 1973 and 1974.5 frames to get a steeper fork angle for quicker steering. They would go from the stock 13.5" shock length to 14" or 14.5" to jack up the rear of the bike. My 1973 Hare Scrambler with 14.125" shock length in the most forward swing arm hole is giving me the 17" axle to under frame distance.

Any and all feedback will be appreciated.

Tom,

I have the PV ride, a 1984 KTM MXC, but I haven't really looked too hard for a vintage bike because I would really like to ride my own Penton Mint 400. Tim Hamilton said he would take it out for me, we just haven't figured out the logistics because he lives 3 hours away from me and I would need to get it back in time to prepare it for Florida. It is such an awesome bike. I put a 39.5mm Mikuni on it last week and it does wheelies in 4th gear with 14/52 sprockets!!! Maybe it's so awesome just because of the cold weather and it's running too lean!! I think you should ride it and I'll retire and be your pit crew!!!

Thank you for our concern and offer. Let's keep in touch.
