Can you tell what year this Peton is?

This bike was on ebay listed as a 1973 250 Penton. I asked the seller for serial numbers and he gave me 64 30 003 010 for the engine. Can't figure out what that is. He could not find a frame serial number. After a few questions he said it might be a 1974.

Any Ideas what this is?

This is the link to a picture of the bike.

Looks to be a 74and a half thru 76crosscountry frame, with all the gold bike 73 goodies on it with a newwer 74-75 mx pipe with a supertrapp welded on it!Would make an excellent race bike!Super quiet, better frame, beautiful gold tank! nice bike but not original?wolfee!;)

With the 75 components do you think it would be eligible in the 74 AHRMA class?

Absolutely, forks ok! just stand the shocks up in the top eye and far back mount, make sure you run 14.25 or.50eye to eye shocks, after mounting just make sure your rear wheel travel isn't more than four inches!you can get the plastic shims which will take up the distance of move ment on your shock shafts, they make different mils of size bushings slit to slide try the springs legal your travel so your measurement of movement is limited to four inches, top shock eye to swingarm bolt 4 inches!its legal, the longer length shock you want and are legal with shims ran in position mentioned!longer length helps making bike turn and keeping the 13.5 eye to eye wich make the thing turn like a chopper!Ok great though for running in laid down45 position! You don'want longer than 13.5 for laid down springs should be110-150 pds laid down and 75-110 standing up!Ohlins are the way to go!14.0-14.5 eye to eye, tell them your weight and kind of riding and what size bushing mm and install ready to go!Progressives and works are ok too just cheaper?Legends of dirt in colorado sells the old 5way ajustable Mavericks if your on a buget! around 140 bucks new, cheap alternate!only!that frame is good because that frame is eligable for the gp or historic class also when you lay rear shocks down with no shaft shims, you will just wish you had a 76 marzzochi leading axle front end that will fit rite on there too!Wolfee!;)

54 30 003 010 is the part number for an early 250 engine case, quite possibly a '73. It's my guess that the 64 in the number was a typo and you were given a part number instead. The motor serial number for a '73 250 should read more like "3-540xxxx". The frame serial number for a '73 should read something like "54 30xxxxxx". If the frame is without serial, it could be replacement frame.

Don't forget, "restored to mint".  Looks to be Husky rear fender?  If the guy can't give you the motor number, kind of say's to me that he doesn't really know what he is looking at.  Probably why this bike hasn't sold for what he is asking.
