While there was only one Penton rider in competition at Woodland Motocross Park in Washington state, there were several Penton owners in attendance. Jon McLean raced his 1974 250cc Hare Scrambler successfully in one class.

Penton owners Gary Osborn and Clay Light were also in attendance, as was probably one of the most successful Penton motocross racers in the '70s, Buck Murphy. KTM guru Thom Green wasn't here, though. He probably got caught in the snowstorm just north of Woodland, near Chehalis!

Jon had mentioned that he was posting a photo of Buck somewhere on the POG site. Buck still competes at an occassional AHRMA Vintage National or two each year and hasn't lost much speed.

Look for my coverage in Cycle News of the event somewhere down the road.

Clay I was there.... In the +50 PV Intermediate class I won both motos for the overall... (small class) It was a great day of racing. there was some snow on the ground  and the weather was pretty cool but the track was great. The racing was fast and fun.
By the way Jon let Seige race his 250 scrambler I never did find out how he liked it though. I will ask him this week when I talk with him.
Me no Guru, just learned alot from the folks in this group. Jon is more of a Guru than I, I ask him when I do not know what to do. Sorry I missed you...

Thom and I chatted Saturday while he wrenched away at the broken shift shaft in the Maico he was wringing out for the day...how's that go again?... Maico-Breako or something?

There's a pic of Buck and his daughter at http://www.siegecraftnw.com/VDR.htm  He's tuning and prepping old bikes for a couple of other young ones around. Not sure if all my facts are 100%, but I believe Buck was the only "factory" Penton MXer who finished in any series top standings against the national/international racers back before a Penton became a KTM. Buck rode for Penton West in '74. He took 3rd overall in the '74 Superbowl of Motocross series behind Karsmaker and Thorwaldson, winning a first ever KTM moto at Houston that year. Also finished 2nd or so in the Florida MX series that summer. He had Brad Lackey's old tuner/mechanic breathe fire into his Harescrambler 250...none other than Penton West's chief engineer and go-fast-guy Carl Cranke.

My Harescrambler would have fared better than the 7-3 results showed for last Saturday, but I was busy jawing in the pits and missed the start of the 1st moto...was down one lap from the get-go. When I jumped in I did get the little 250 HS hanging right behind the Suzuki guy that got the overall for the last 3 laps...rider shortcomings, not the bike.

Thom,

Sorry I missed you at the races! I went over tom Tom M's pit area, figuring you'd be there, but I didn't see you.

Jon, please give me an email at the address below, regarding the red bike, as soon as you can.

Hi Jon and Thom

Do they run a 100CC class at Woodland?? Setting my sights to be there
on April 8. If not the 125 6 Day will do.

Clay, I'll hook up with Anderberg (hopefully) and follow him out West to raceland. I can pick up the Deek then.

Woo Hoo Thanks Jon!!

WE'll mount the little bore on the (may have to paint Red) Green Machine. Hope to get the 125 motor back from Charlie Brown. That'll be a mean machine. it'll go in the Deek, with the Betor forks.

See you there.

Hey deek, good to hear from you, I have heard some talk that the 100cc class is getting so big that they are going to have to split it up and make two classes. The 100cc class is alive and well in the Great Northwest.
I sure hope to see you the 8th, I was talking to one of the guys last week end that preps the track and I was asking him if there were going to be doing anymore races after the series ends and he said that they looked into it but the cost was way too expensive to do, so the 22nd of april will be the last time we ever get to race and that fine track.
I was thinking that it would be a good idea if we could get all the Penton owners and their bikes together for a picture under the welcome to woodland sign. This has been a great track over the years and it will be sad to see it go.
