Greetings to all Pentonians,
I have just purchased 2, 1976 Penton
250. Both might as well be basket cases,
but one man's junk is another man's treasure.
I got 2 great frames, wheels, decent pipes
with silencer and etc. etc.
I thought I could make at least one good 250
out of both. The problem I have run into is
located in the transmissions of both bikes.
The 3/5 gear cluster has teeth broken off
on them ,in both motors. The motors have the
same manufacture date of 3/76. Was this a problem on this model of Penton? Also the
frames have the number 550- etc. Stamped on them and I thouhgt that this was a 400 code.
Could someone enlighten me on either one of these questions.
Thank you very much

It was not common to have this prob with KTM gears but it did happen, just not prevelant.  Most of the later frames for 250 and 400 were stamped 550.  The 55 series Penton parts were changed to 550 by KTM.  This did designate 400 but a lot of parts fit several different models.  Hope that helps a bit.  I have some 250 bottom ends that probably have the gears you need if interested.

Thanks Larry, I really appreciate your
your response. I am going to inspect
the cases and such for any gremlins before
I start ordering parts. Evidently this
father and son that owned these have the same
shifting habits in their genes.
Thanks again
