Can any of you fellas give me some info on a good source where I could purchase the following tools for use on the KTM engines? A dial indicator along with the adapter that threads into your sparkplug hole so you can set the advance/timing properly, a good flywheel puller and the spanner wrench that holds the flywheel and also has the short section of chain to hold the countershaft sprocket.

For the dial indicator/adapter, search Yahoo for "Central Engine Timing Gage 6487", on-line tool sellers have them for about $85, not quite as nice as Motion Pro's. Or cheaper still, buy the adapter for spark plug hole from Motion Pro for $11 and buy a cheap-Chinese dial indicator for around $12 from someone like //www.harborfreight.com .

The flywheel puller is a must-have, Al B. should have them. I spent $40 for a low-budget electric impact wrench which I've used like a madman for a few years now...never had to buy any other special holder tools or other since. Just add a little resistance by hand and let the impact whacks do the rest (gently). Has worked wonders on several KTM case splits, and 1 each CZ and Husky teardowns.

Jon, thanks for the additional information. I am going to try and get these necessary tools I need to do this work in the upcoming week. There is a Harbor Frieght store in my area that I will have to check. Am I correct in my understanding that the threads on the nut retaining the flywheel on a KTM (1979 420) are left handed threads?

I don't know ? , maybe they went up in price since I bought mine at the local Yamaha shop in 1974.

The "flywheel nut" on the end of the crank IS LEFT HANDED.

Is that dial indicator from Central tools in millimeters or thousands of an inch? I can't tell by the pic. I have been looking for one in millimeters, or a digital one that does both. Thanks, Mike

Thanks Bob. Yes it is sort of pricey. For as little that I think it would get used I think I'll search out the more economically priced units. I dont really believe there would be any difference in the accuracy of one over the other. Mike,did you check the Penton Imports site? I think there is a conversion formula for decimal to mm for setting he timing.

There are dozens of sites on the web for Metric to US conversions, but the ease of having to convert several different specs to US from Metric is a time consuming issue with all of the things that I plan to do with it. There was a tool vendor that I talked with at the Corvette show in Carlisle PA in August that claimed he could get a digital one, but I haven't spoken with him yet to find out whether it has a spark plug hole adapter, and I was wondering if this one was Metric. I have one that is in thousandths, but don't have the threaded adapter for the spark plug hole. Mike

Motion Pro sells the spark plug hole adapter separately, in long-version for air cooled fins, $11-something. I made one out of copper pipe with a cut off spark-plug thread soldered to it, use o-rings on indicator to hold it snug...works, but a lot of hassle vs. $11. See motionpro.com website.
