Presently working on subject bike to restore to running condition, and will need new sprockets.  I believe bike came with 12/52 gearing, but not sure of that.    I am giving consideration to using a 13/56 to 13/58.  Interested in any success or lack of it with any one using this combination.  Looking for slow stump pulling 1st gear.  Is there enough operating room for chain under the chain mudguard, as well as through the rear sprocket chain guide, and to clear the swingarm into the C/S sprocket ?
Appreciate your response, and Thanks !  Nelson McCullough

I believe the more typical gearing stock was 13/54 or so. 1st gear is really low regardless, so I've run 14/54 on a couple of '74-'77 250s and still used 2nd gear for MX starts and was plenty low on 1st gear. I've run my '77 GS6 250 in a dual sport last time out, and changed to 15/54. 1st was still plenty low for single-track and log-climbing but anything over 55mph on pavement required rpm's I wasn't too crazy about...could have used a 7th.

15t front precluded using the case protector, but was otherwise fine. I'd think 13/58 would be extra low and trials worthy in 1st.

Nelson - I believe 13/52 would be considered standard, for enduro anyway. That is what I have always used and works OK.

WOW, I must be nuts then. I am using 13/57 on my 1978 MC5 250, Hare Scrambler, Piner, and 1977 MC5 175. 12/60 on the 1975 Six Day and 14/52 on the Mint 400 and MC80 400. I probably could/should go to a smaller rear sprocket on the 250s. However, I sure love they way they go right now!!!!

Correction. The Piner has 12/56 sprockets, I checked it last night.
