Spongy Front Brake Cable

I'm looking for a better front brake cable for my 72-74 CMF Pentons.  Presently using Terry Cable which are good guality but they have too much longitudial flex.  Recommendations - supplier, P/N.  Thanks

To eliminate alot of your cable flex- Fit the brake shoes to the HUB.

Further to what Doug says: I have a bunch of Pentons with a bunch of different combinations of cables, and brake shoes that are at different points in their life cycles. I have one bike in particular that has a Terrycable, and absolutely great brake feel.

I am beginning to suspect that brake "feel" or reaction may have a lot more to do with the amount of wear on the shoes, and how they fit the hub, than the cable itself. Think about it: the more wear, the greater the angle of the brake cam as it acts on the shoes - and I think the greater the amount of "sponginess" that is felt.

I haven't had a chance to compare two bikes side by side and compare the difference betweent the O.D. of the shoes and the I.D. of the hub, but I strongly suspect that the bigger the number, the more "sponginess"" felt at the lever.

Food for thought anyway in your quest for better braking.

I had a similar experience with the 74 250 that Too Tall Paul bought from me before Mid-Ohio, and it turned out to be worn splines on the brake actuator lever, which had become slightly loose at some point. Another lever and the proper tightness cured the problem. Mike
