Interesting point, Sachs engine

Not sure if everyone here knew it but Sachs offered complete Magnesium engines (cases and side covers) on some of the early Pentons. Thought this a neat tidbit of info:)

OK, how early were these bikes and how can you tell?  I assume setting the magnesium on fire is not a good way to tell.  Knowing my luck they probably stopped at V1345.

I have only found them to be used on the early 5 speeds, 68/69 so far, butch haircut heads.  I have found some clutch and ignition covers on 70 and 71 stuff.  Mag can be distinguished by it being 1/2 the weight of aluminum cases.  If you have the two side by side, there is no difference until you pick them up and wow![:0]  I will check for date stamps on the stuff when I get some more time.  Just thought this was cool.

I am trying to find a aluminum cylinder made like the cast iron.  If anyone has one and wants to part with let me know.

I checked all my Sachs stuff and the sidecovers and cases are all 68/69 with no date stamps (butch head engines).  The cases are distinguished by an unusual opening in the top where the cylinder slides in (port area is rounded VS sharp cornered) I think I will build one of these and bring it to POG sometime after Mid Ohio. Too cool![^]  I want to weigh the difference between the two styles when finished, aluminum VS mag, I'll bet there is a few pounds weight difference.
