In my search for an exhaust pipe for my 77 MC
5 400, I have come across several different
ideas and now I am not sure which is right.
I found 2 pipes at a junkyard with the small
flared ends and the 1/2 egg round end covers w springs, intact. This is what my manual shows
as the correct style for this bike, but they
look like they might be 250 pipes because of their diameter. I have another that is more
the same size all the way bike to the end and
requires a flat style cap The baffle is the
same size as the other two previously mentioned pipes but the end is different. My
manual shows that this is the 250 pipe.
I have one more that is fat all the way back
and the opening is about 2", with a flat cap, about 3 or 4 inches round
that comes out and then the baffle comes out in one piece. This is the one that came with this bike but the end piece is missing and
I'm not sure what it looks like. The manual
shows no pipe that looks like this.
I also have 1 more pipe but I am pretty sure
it is a Harescrambler pipe. It has the  baseball sized,2 holed silencer on it.
I know this is a lot of pipe talk, but in my
quest to find one that works I am not sure
I have one that will work. Any ideas?

Tim.....my 1977 400 GS6 came new with a pipe that has the "1/2 egg" and springs on the end as you described in your post....so it could be that the MC5 model also had that type too....however, I recently bought a replacement pipe and it has a squared off end and a threaded stud holding a center drilled baffle plate....

Guess I wasn't much help was I???????

Thanks Steve, How big is the outlet at
the center of that egg or cap? I think
the ones I have are about3/4 to 1" in dia.

Tim,
I am in the process of rebuilding a 74 250 Harescrambler.  My bike came with a pipe that was fat as you describe all the way to the back with a diameter of a little more than 2 inches with a flat cap, two holes and conected by a spring.  The cap appears to be about 2.5 inches in diameter.  My manual shows a different pipe also, but I was told that there were two different pipes installed on that bike.  My end piece was also missing and when you remove the ring clip the baffle and spring comes out as one unit.  Knowing alittle history about my bike, I believe that this was stock equipment.  Hope that helps.
