Jerry Chafton

Hi, my name is Jerry Chafton and after reading Alan Buehners POG history I realized we are encouraged to tell something about ourselves so others will know a little about us, so here goes.
I started racing motorcycles in the deserts of Southern California in the 60's. Remember the movie 'On Any Sunday"? I was in the line up of that monster desert race. In the 70's I was riding CZ but when Penton came along I quickly changed horses.

From 72' until 75' I rode Pentons out of the Honda Hut of Bowling Green, Ky. In 73' I co-rode the Mint 400 in Las Vegas with Danny Young, many of you probably know Danny. Shortly after that he started riding for Team Penton. We traveled and raced together at many events. To tell you what kind of rider he was, I crashed 3 miles from the finish of the first leg and Danny went on to ride the remaining 200 miles without a relief partner (in the dark) and finished.
If anyone wants to hear some good stories about Danny let me know.

During that era we rode events like the Stone Mountain Nat'l, The Alligator, Lonesome Pine Nat'l, Ft. Hood Texas ISDT Quailifer. The Black Coal Nat'l, Daniel Boone Nat'l, Daniel Boone Hare and Hound, Little Harpeth Nat'l, Twin States ISDT Qualifier, and many more including an enduro in Miamisburg Ohio (I think) which practically required a boat if you were to finish the race.

I want to thank the Penton family and everyone involved in making the POG successful. I am really sorry I missed the 40th Celebration, it would have been a good time to relive some memories with Danny.
A big thank you to those that have already welcomed me to the forum and I look forward to swapping stories with some of you. When I finish the 250 I am prepping I hope to see some of you at an event someday.
