FranKTMstein Penton 175 frame/400 engine

I am excited to attempt to build (or, knowing myself, hopefully find someone else to help me build) a Frankenstein Penton along the lines of what Larry Perkins has suggested. It would match a 72 Jackpiner frame to a 400cc engine.

I happen to have laying around the garage:

1.  A 1977 400 engine and pipe (needs some work)
2.  A 1972 Jackpiner frame and swingarm.

So, I guess I need to source some 35mm trees and forks.

Has anyone built this bike yet?  If so, what carb/shocks are you running?  Any other mods other than what Larry suggested by way of frame gussets, etc.?

The refreshing thing about this bike would be that there is no need to be "original" with anything.  Just worry about functionality.

I'm thinking this thing might rip the spokes right out of its wheels!

If you are talking about building a 76/77 400 to compete in Historic class, I have what you are looking for. Email me for a complete redone from fork seals to new S12 Michelin tires, swingarm bearings, good works shock, new brakes, very nice pipe, etc... late 76/early 77 MC5 400 complete roller available without the engine, if you want to rebuild your own 77 400 engine. Here is a pic of it before I took out the engine to have Gary Ellis rebuild it. I have a new rear fender and seat cover. Mike [email protected]
By the way this was a 79 400 engine installed in the pic, so they interchange from 1974-early 1980.

I think that when Larry posted the idea of a jackpiner/400 combo (http://pentonusa.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5234&SearchTerms=400,72,35mm), the idea probably was to build a bike to race in that class.

I wouldn't be looking to mx it, just trail and enduro.  It would be the low seat height and big power that would appeal to me.

Your bike there looks really nice.  Because I have almost all the pieces sitting around, I am going to give it a go to put one together with what I have. (But it sure is tempting to just reach out and buy one where all the hard work has been done).[]

My bad,
I thought that you were refering to his more current (1/14/09)comments about the Best Post Vintage KTM and his choice of 1977 MC5 as a cheater bike in the Historic class. Anyway, if anyone is looking for a great bike without the engine, it is for sale. I am keeping the engine that is just rebuilt for this one, since I have several other 76/77 MC5 chassis to put it in, and I am trying to build up a downpayment for Ron C's KRP Flat track bike. Best Offer. I do also have a 74.5 175 freshly painted frame with low mileage running gear and fresh 1st over engine and nice pipe, which I would separate to some extent. Mike

I would love to see pictures of that build some time. I'm in for a slight change of plan. Apparently the extra "400" engine I received along w my 78 MC400 is actually a 250. More the better since I doubt I could handle that surge of power in the JP frame. The 78 400 is scary enough for me as is w/ basically no brakes. I did source some 35mm forks so my Junkpiner parts are nearly there.
