I am sure that this question has been addressed a number of times on this site, but I need some help. I am not quite sure how to read the engine ID numbers. As noted in an earlier post, I picked up a Penton project bike--which I believe to be a Hare Scrambler. The last five digits on the engine are 03010. According to the chart this number coincides with production year number 3. What does that mean? Regarding the frame ID, the way I understand it is you look at the three numbers after 54. So for examble the frame is 54-504, then the bike was produced in 1975 in April. Is this correct?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you are correct that 504 is April of 75. The engine # also should start with a 5-54 XXXXX, so if your # is actually 5-54 03010, then your engine was the 3010th 250 engine produced during the 1975 production run. The engine # is located just above the RH side ignition cover just under the cylinder fins. Mike

The engine number is 54-30-003-010. What does this mean?

Thanks,

Michael,
You are not looking in the right place for the engine #.
The engine # is located just above the RH side ignition cover just under the cylinder fins. It is hand stanped into the engine case, just behind the RH SIDE front engine mount bolt boss.
What you have is just the case casting ID #. Mike
