'72 JP frame gussets

I've done a search and there are many topics about adding gussets to the steering head area. Does anyone have any pictures or diagrams on where exactly this gusset needs to go?

I think Kent Knudson had an article in SKT about adding the gussetts. It was probably 5 years ago. Sorry I can't help more. Anyone else remember?

Hey Brian, we met at the ISDTRR. This is a little oblique to your question but the pentonmotorcycles.com site ued to have frame gussets for DKWs that looks the same--appears to be a kind of tang/gusset that wraps around the bottom of the head tube (that is mountain bike terminology but I guess one would call it the steerer tube/neck). Quote below from that site. There used to be a pic and apparent instructions too.

"New reproduction DKW frame gusset recall kits from 1973. Very rare. $18.00 a set."

Also I am sure that the bike w/ a 400 engine in a 72 Jackpiner frame has this gusset added. It was for sale recently here but I don't recall pix of this area.

Hello,  I have been through the steering head situation.   On my 1970 Penton Berkshire, the bottom piece where the steering head race is seated broke right off.  I had recently purchased the bike in 1972, and we think the piece had broken because the previous owner had neglected the proper steering head bearing tolerance.  When the bearings are loose, the frame takes a real beating as the races and bearings beat themself together.   It is very important to keep the steering head bearings properly tightened.   The frame was gas welded, and I never had a problem again.  I had a steering head gusset, but never installed it.    On the other hand, I have seen early CMF Penton frames with the entire steering head broken off.  Perhaps a gusset would help this situation.  I think my 1976 Penton/KTM frame has a gusset which wraps around the bottom of the steering head neck.

Right, this is the gusset I am talking about. Does anyone have pictures of a later bike with this? I want to make sure when I make my gusset I get the correct placement.
