Hey gang we have had another stolen bike, 1999 Yamaha YZ 250. Owner did not have a VIN recorded!!
Please record your VINS so police can at least enter the bike as stolen . As I said before we can't even enter them into the system w/o a VIN. W/O a VIN even if it is recovered police can't locate the owner.

Can the police enter a serial number that is not 17 digits?  Many vintage bikes had far less than the "required" 17 digits.

Car vins were 13 digits up until 1980, in 1981 they went to 17 digits
so I would think that authorities can work with less digits.

Yes, they certainly can work with < 17 digits.  I only had the engine number on my stolen KTM and they took that.

We can work work with any amount of numbers as a VIN. What ever would be on a title/bill of sale (if they exist) is what we would use.
We can enter V01 if that is the manufacterer's number.

There should be a special way to deal with these thieves once caught. We still have some old laws on the books for stealing lobsters, and Plimoth Plantation still has stockades.
