74' KTM 250cc clutch

Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a ball bearing between the clutch rod and the clutch plate bolt, on the new style kits. My measurement is at about 61cm and I think it is supposed to be 53cm. Any suggestions?

All the manuals I have looked at, do not show a ball bearing, except on older style. Is this true?

This is what I know, The OEM two rod set up has a ball between them. The OEM one rod unit has a very very small ball cage bearing ring.

Yes, I have the bearing cage in place on the clutch arme side, however upon inspection, I found a ball bearing between the rod end and the clutch plate. I think this is why my distance is so far off.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but doesn't the bearing cage assembly go on the clutch side against the inside of the pressure plate? Sounds like someone tried to install it without removing the clutch pressure plate, or they are using the earlier design pressure plate or clutch set up that originaly used the 2 rods and ball in between them. Jeffrey on the new style clutch arm,there is a solid clutch rod with a cup on the end. Cup end goes to the new activator side,then a small bearing race. Then a pin to the activator side. If you have a 77 motor parts manual it shows the brake down there. Later Gary

I must be thinking of my 78 MC5 style clutch, that has a recess in the inside of the pressure plate where the bearing rides directly on the pressure plate, allowing the rod to not be spun, and wear, by the clutch upon engagement. I am not home, so I can't look in my parts book on the earlier style. Mike

The bearing cage side, I have assembled correctly, its the clutch side that has me confused. THe manual does not show a single ball bearing between the rod end and the clutch plate, but there was one in there, upon disassembly. It looks like it would mak sense to have one there, but I think it is making the distance too long.

The early ones with the 2 rods and ball in the center don't have one against the clutch pressure plate, so I would say it doesn't belong there. Mike

That would be correct no ball fearing to clutch side.

A 74 KTM would have 2, 108mm rods with a 6mm ball in between them (222mm total).  Round ends outward on the rods.  The actuator is fixed on the right side so all adjustment would come from the pressure plate thickness on the clutch itself.  You want 40 to 45 mm play at the actuator arm on the right side and there you have it!
