This is probably a good question for Dwight Rudder:

I have a Barbour International Suit (Jacket) that needs help. The collar is frayed, the liner is torn/frayed also. The jacket will require re-waxing too.

I see Barbour has a service to restore/repair these garments.  Has anyone used their services? Are there folks that specialize in this stateside?

There is a place in Maine. I'll find it for you. My Barbour field jacket from 1986 I thought would last forever. But if you let the wax wear too thin the cotton fabric will develop holes and frays that must be patched. Can pretty much ruin it. I like mine as is but it is not water or thorn proof

Thanks John,

Like I said, my old Barbour is from the early 70's and was thrown in with a Kawasaki F7 175 purchase I made in Michigan.  Ii's been in a barn packed in a box for years. When I pulled it out it was full of mold and mildew; phew!!!!  But I still like it more than my Belstaff jacket that is only a few years old.

Back when I was living in Lakeside, CA (near San Diego) I Managed a Western Clothing Store, called Boot Barn (they have a web site: //www.bootbarn.com ) and we sold Outback Dusters and Jackets that were constructed with about the same material as the Barbour stuff. Boot Barn sells the product to re-apply the WAX. Basically, as I don't recall the full instructions, you heat the jacket, or whatever you are re-waxing, in the oven at about 250 degrees for a specific amount of time, then remove the item and apply the wax and then reheat it again. The was came in a plastic tub and I really don't recall the price, but I do remember it wasn't all that costly. If anyone is really interested I can call my contact I still have there and get the exact price and instructions.

Never used their services.  I have a couple Barbour jackets but all my old jackets were Belstaff. Let us know how they do. I think the wax is just bees wax melted and painted on with a brush.

Pete, here is the place:
http://www.newenglandreproofers.com/

I have not used them but I have been told they are quite expert.

The relax is not too much. They will quote you for odor removal and sewing @ $40/hr.
Keep in mind that depending on scope of work it might not be economical to restore your jacket unless it holds special meaning for you.  Also keep in mind that Barbour in England will reject a job if they deem the item to be beyond it's "useful life".  Ha ha every Penton would be such under commonplace definitions!

The wax that is available via any Barbour, Belstaff or Filson (hunting jackets) dealer is ok but it is never quite the same as a factory job. I've re-waxed a dozen times over the years and it always turns out a little splotchy even using a heat gun. And if you have tears you want expert help for sure.  If you would be comfortable recovering a seat then maybe the job is not too daunting but the key is preserving the waterproof character of the item  Good luck!  Keep before and after pix. John
