I just obtained a project 76 125 penton.  The most important parts are good; i.e. tank, airbox and cover, wheel hubs, ceriani forks not rusted, top-end all there, frame professionally painted, motor apart, etc..

QUESTION: I would like to talk to someone who owns a 1976 125cc penton enduro,. Let me know by this site or email me at [email protected], 802/889-3585.  I'm not sure what to do with it at this point. Thanks for your help.

Talk to Ron Carbaugh or Bob Andersohn, they have one each restored!

Kip,

Thanks for sharing info on who has 76' 125 enduros.  That year I believe is the last year for enduros down low,  while the MC5 motocross was the first for long travel suspension in 1976.
I also picked up 4 used B engine cranks I will inspect looking for a good pin.

cheers,

Isnt the '76 a KTM 125 engine?

Brian,

Yes, the 1976 had the first ktm engine in it.  it was not competitive though for motocross, correct me if i am wrong.

My question (s): what is the length of the rear shocks for the bike eye to eye?  the shocks i got with it were wasted.

Pretty much all Pentons up to '77 use 13.5" shocks.

Competitive for motocross:

I remember reading an October 1976 Modern Cycle review that compared a 1976 KTM 125 MC5 to the 1976 Honda CR 125 and the KTM blew it away in lap times (although Dirt Bike magazine favored the Honda.  This was when Super Hunky was with MC, not DB, so take that for what it's worth).  I can't remember how, or if, it was compared to the Yamaha or Suzuki, but Modern Cycle seemed to like the bike a lot.  I seem to remember the review saying that it had a lot of low end for a 125, so on courses that weren't level, it had a big advantage.

I remember a POG member saying a couple of years ago that it was hard to keep them running, and took a practically new one to the dump.  Again, for what it's worth, I had one from 1978 to around 1981 and I had zero problems with it - it had a Lectron carb on it, so maybe that was the difference.  Also, it was basically maintenance free for a 125.

I remember reading about early 76 125 engines having case problems. Mike

Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback on the 1976 crosscountry penton 125 with the ktm engine and pre-long travel model (i.e. non-MC5).

Info on more pentons carrying 31.5 eye to eye shocks in the rear, thanks.

Ok, i'll restore it in time and since there were not alot of them does this mean Al Buehner has plenty of parts?  Ok, i'll call.
cheers
