Lee,
Send me a picture or two of that swingarm also. The swingarm is the same is'nt it for the GS and MC models? I think the only difference back then was the addition of a rear frame loop and different rear fender on the GS? Thanks,
                                      Bob

Bob,
78 actual GS-6 had the large tunneback frame and a different swingarm with a center stand, and the front chain slider is the tall enclosed type with a tall matching bracket and a large black plastic chain guard bolted to the swingarm like on the 77 GS-6. I have 78 GS-6 250 myself. The GS-6 frame does not have a removable rear frame loop, so sometimes the bolt on rear frame loop which was as addition that could be added to a 78 MC-5 could be mistaken for a GS model. The 78 GS-6 models usually had a frame number starting with 801, 805, or 807, where the MC-5 has a frame number starting with 855. Since Lee's tank uses a tank strap to hold it on, it very well may be a GS-6. Mike

Some GS had side stands some had center.  The swingarm is different between side and center stands.  Good news is each will fit MC or GS frame.

The 78 MC5 swingarm is 1/2" longer than the 78 GS-6 and although you could probably use the GS-6 swingarm on the MC-5 you might have to cut the tall chain slider off some to clear the plastic airbox, and remove the plastic chain guard which the MC-5 did not have. The GS-6 uses the Magnesium snail shaped airbox, same as the earlier GS-6 and MC-5 bikes. The 78 MC-5 aorbox is a one year only airbox and there were replacement Hi-point and Acerbis airboxes with quick change airfilters available. Mike

My 78 MC5 with a GS6 swingarm and center stand.  Has The MC5 airbox. I have the mag box but didn't need it.  Maybe I was lucky.

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether the GS-6 chain guard would clear the MC-5 airbox, but it looks like you didn't have any problems. I doubt if the 1/2" shorter swingarm would be any issue and it may even turn sharper. The center stand is definitely a plus! The GS-6 snail airbox might not be a direct bolt in with the tabs in a different location but I have never checked to see how similar the mounts are. Mike
