Needed: GS6 Aluminum Engine Stay

Hi all,
I'm in the process of reassembling a 77 Penton 400 GS6 and just discovered that I'm missing the aluminum stay that fits between the engine case and frame on the right hand side. This stay is approx 8.75" in length from center-to-center of the mounting holes. The lower mounting hole is 10mm and the upper end is 8mm. Anyone have one that they are willing to sell or trade ?? Let me know. Thanks !!

hey dave. is it straight or does it have a curve/offset on the bottom to fit under the cylinder? the one that i looked at mounted to a buddies bike has a bend on the bottom. i may have a striaght one.      chi jer

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the 77 GS6 parts book shows 2 different aluminum stays for the right side. I'm thinking the difference might be which magneto cover is used. The full length mag cover probably takes the offset stay where as the short magneto cover uses the straight stay. Which magneto cover does your buddy have on his bike ? My 250 GS6 has a short mag cover with a straight stay and it clears the cylinder fine. The only other thing I can think of that might make a difference is the decompressor valve which exits the 400 cylinder right about the same area as the right engine stay. The offset stay would give a little extra space to accomodate the decompressor valve. I have the decompressor valve and plan to use it and so I'll have to look at that. I should have the cylinder on the engine tomorrow and can get a better assessment of which stay I need after that. I'll post what I see after getting the cylinder and decompressor installed. I don't think it makes a difference on the mag cover, the curved one can be removed much easier, the straight one hits the fins on the cylinder and makes it difficult to remove.

I always thought that the curved one was used on the 400, because there was less room between the fins on the larger cylinder, but both are listed in the 77 MC-5 & 77 GS-6 chassis manuals. The curved one shows astericks in each engine size and the straight one has Qty 1 in each engine size catagory, so I am not sure. Mike

I've got the straight one on a '77 400GS. I installed a KTM factory decompressor and had to use a Dremel tool to make a slight relief in the engine stay. I did pick up a curved stay on Ebay but have not installed yet. I suspect my clearance problems with the decompressor will be solved but it'll probably make getting to the carb even more fun!

Thanks to all for the replies and input. After reading all the replies so far and getting the cylinder on the bike, it looks like the offset stay is the one I will need. If someone has one that they would sell I'd greatly appreciate it. Let me know. Thanks !!
