Very nice look DEEK, I hope they did some serious bracing around the steering column. That always was a weak spot, in the day I could never keep mine crack free. The local welder was a guy by the name of Ed Crowell. He also owned a Penton/Hodaka dealership and always kidded me about riding a DKW.

What is the purpose of cutting notches in the fins like that?

Notching the fins supposedly allows more cooling due to more area (heat sink).  Seems to me that there is actually less surface area, just more "edge".  Since I would think you are getting the cooling effect from more than just the "edge" then, it doesn't make alot of sense.  I must admit that the CZ porcupine motor always looked trick.  Cheers.
