I've seen a couple of 73 yellow Hare Scramblers recently in which the yellow is worn away and showing through green gelcoat.  So do these bikes indicate that the factory used green gel coated Six Day tanks and air boxes that they painted over with yellow to produce the Hare Scramblers?  Next question is: Did they go back to gelcoat on the 74's and the red parts?

Yes and Yes.  I have a NOS '73 tank and you can see the green underneath the tank.

I punched a hole in my '73 yellow-tank Harescrambler when I dropped it on a foot peg. Yikes! Talk about heart stopping. Had to grind down the area around the hole to fiberglass it. During the repair I saw no evidence of a different color.

I have several tanks with different colors under the top color. My '72 Berkshire has green under the red, I have a Mint tank with blue under the white, and a Jackpiner tank with green under the blue. All of these tanks are gel-coat on both layers of color, none of them are painted on top of gel-coat.

Interesting.  The only Penton tank experience I have is with Jackpiners, 2 toasters, 1 watermellon, and 1 mx, and they are all blue gelcoat until glass, and never have gelcoat on the ridges.  So do we think the factory may have even re-gelcoated tanks on hand to produce new models?

Yes, I think if they had an excess of a one color they would recoat those to whatever they needed. I also have some airboxes with different colors under the top color.
