I have a tip for cleaning and prepping magnesium. After you grind and/or sand blast the metal to get all the corrosion out, soak the part in Pine-Sol. I dont know if it is available outside the US, but it has a very mild acid, glycolic acid, which is used to chemical skin peels, so its very mild. The Pine-Sol also has detergents and pine oil which completely degrease the part. When you are done, every tiny little piece of corrosion will have been dissolved and the metal will be etched and ready for paint. Pine-Sol is harmless to rubber and plastic, so its also and EXCELLENT carburetor cleaner. Make sure you get the original Pine-Sol, not all of them have the glycolic acid.

After soaking in Pine-Sol for about 45 minutes.
