'73 250 HS kickstarter return spring

My kick starter return spring seemes to have broken.My question is do I need to remove anything from the clutch side to split the case;and is there any other tricks that I should know before I start.

Take the primary gear off,remove the clutch basket. You will need to split the cases to do it right.

Hi Jeff,

This is how the shaft and the starter parts look like when installed:



You cannot move the shaft out axially but need to compress the spring to move the shaft to the side. This needs some clearance. This is how the assembly looks like after removal of the shifting mechanism and the shifting drum:



So there isn't much room to angle out the kick starter shaft. In addition you will have to measure the clearance between the two ratchet parts seen in the first image. If you can get these parts out with the transmission lay and main shafts in place then the clutch basket can stay on. However, you may be better off with taking the clutch basket off so the transmission shafts can at least be lifted. I don't think you will have to remove the primary sprocket as it attaches to the crank shaft which can stay in place. You can remove the clutch basket with the primary sprocket installed.

Always, always change the clutch side crank seal when you have gone this far...

So ,I split the cases to fix the return spring, all that went well but some one has painted the intake side with some kind of red paint witch is bubbling and peeling off.I pulled the crank out and cleaned off all the old paint.My question is do I need to seal the magnesium with something and with what if I do?

do the clutch bearing ?  they go out before the other bearings.

If you want to seal the mag cases you can use red glyptol.  I clean moisture damage/pitting then brush it on.  Caswell sells it by the quart.  Excellent for pourious castings of all types.
