I recently tried a good way to clean out the years of soot, carbon, and smooge on the inside and outside of exhaust pipes.  I work in an electric motor repair shop, where we have "burn out" ovens that are used to burn out varnish from motor windings in the stators so that the copper can be removed, and the iron core be clean for re-winding.  Usually several stators will go in the oven and the oven will run at about 750 deg F for six or more hours.  I put the pipe parts in the oven one day, and the next day everything that wasn't metal was absolutely gone or turned to powder.  Easy dusting in the bead blaster then paint.  So, if anybody wants to get the inside of their old pipes clean, find the nearest motor shop and ask them to lay the pipe in the oven when they burn out some stators.

I just heat them in a fire or on a grill.

Yeh, do what Brian said. Then wipe in down with the Wife's good dish towel. Well, maybe not.  #128516;
