Does anyone know the bearing number for a Steel Tanker rear hub with the 12 mm axle? Also does anyone have a backing plate for the same with a 12 mm axle hole?

Al Beuhner has them.  (4) 6003 in the hub, (2) 6004 in the sprocket carrier.

Thanks Keith, I've got the 6003. They have 17 mm I/S hole for a CMF axle.

The Steel Tanker has a 12 mm axle all the way across.

My 70 Tanker used (4) 6003 on the axle and (2) 6004 on the sprocket carrier.  The 6003 has 17mm bore, and the 6004 has 20mm bore.  The 68-69 parts manual lists (4) 6003 on the axle and (1) 6004 on the sprocket carrier.  As far as fitting a 12mm axle, bearings with that bore size are 6001 (28mm OD), 6201 (32mm OD), and 6301 (37mm OD).

Dennis,

The 12mm axle slides through an axle tube, not directly through the bearings. The bearings need to slide onto the axle tube. I think Keith is spot on with the 6003 and 6004 bearings.

The backing plate slides over the axle tube as well, so the opening is more like 17mm and not 12mm. I have a complete NOS backing plate with brakes and all ready to slide on, and used ones as well, if still needed.

I hope my info is correct, if anyone sees this differently just jump right in...:D

Well.............now that makes more sense. The bike I am building was not complete when I got it and it had a CMF axle in it to make it a roller.

I Don't have the right axle tube!

With the right axle tube I have the right backing plate.

What a wealth of information this sight is! Thanks Keith and Paul.

Well..............now I need a Steel Tanker axle tube. Paul can you help again?

Dennis,

I think if Al Buehner has the correct tube that is the way to go. I have a drawer with axle items in it, but with nothing to match up to and no numbers on my items, well you see where I am headed....

Possibly Al can supply all of the guts to your hub and make that part of your project a lot easier. There are a few different things needed to properly put the inside of that hub together properly. If it isn't done properly some issues just may arise as you try to tighten your axle nut with the hope of your wheel turning freely when the nut is tight...:)

If you don't have a parts book for that machine possibly the Easter Bunny could be persuaded to place one in the bottom of your basket.....I think Al Buehner has the proper connections to get that arranged.....:D

Paul

PS  I found a few more of those bash plates today, if the one I sent won't fit the Steel Tanker let me know and I will see if one of these is correct.

Dennis Jones

OK. I've got the correct axle tube coming from Al so I should finally be able to get this rear wheel installed. Thanks Guys!

Paul, when I get the wheel on I'll get the bike off the stand and onto the lift to get the center stand on and check the bash plate.
