Afternoon all, I'm rebuilding a 1975 175 Penton, Frame number 5451187469
and as my wife was working petroleum jelly into the leather to soften it,I noticed the two hooks that normally hook into the frame were bent outward and not inward. Is this correct? and if so do I need a spring to join the two that runs under the steering neck? I would post pictures, unfortunately I cannot figure how to on this site...

Thanks Jim

The hooks face inward. They hook into two holes on either side of a gusset at the steering head. Did you know Al Buehner has strap reproductions on his website?

Hi Jim,

It is nice to hear how your wife is helping you with your restoration project. Very nice indeed !

Possibly what you have is a modified front tank mount/hook that would allow for the tank to be removed quickly without taking the seat off.

Over the years numerous systems have been used to allow for quick access to the wiring and coil area under the tank. Our ISDT machines in 1973 had dual coils and we modified the front hook by attaching washers to the ends of the mount to allow for a quick pull pin to be inserted through the washers and frame.

On some of my Qualifier and enduro machines I did just what you described is on your machine and used some heavy duty inner tube rubber bands to hold the front tank strap mount in place. The whole idea was to allow for quick access to the under tank area, never had an issue with these modifications and trust me they were put to the test.

Good luck with your project and hope this helps.

Morning Paul, Hope all is well...First off, my wife Amy enjoys helping me out when I'm working on a bike. We live in the country, so alot of times i need another set of hands to help out holding, lifting or just fitting something in place and she always happy to help out.

Secondly, thanks for the advice or tip on the rubber inner tube strap to hold the tank strap in place. I'm going to do just as you said and run with that. It makes total sense, this way you do not have to remove the seat to access the items under the tank.
It worked for you in the ISDT, it will work for me just poking around the woods

Thanks Again Jim

I had a challenge with a Husky tank.  It was from a 1972 but mounted on a 1976 and the rear mount on the '76 was nonexistent, so Penton tank strap to the rescue.  I used a large zip tie to hold it on the front:

This is Doug Wilford's 1973 ISDT bike.  The front strap holder has the ends turned out and I added the tube strap since the original hold down was missing.

Jim,

In true ISDT fashion you should use two of those rubber bands made from an old inner tube....:) The primary and then a back up !
