Tank Mung Cure (BB*B-12+S)

Maybe you saw my prior post asking how to remove tank mung from a tank that had been sitting for almost 20 years full of gas.
Well, today I found a solution! In trying to clean up the hard, black coating that was on the bottom of the gas cap, the only thing that would even come close to dissolving it was Berryman's B-12 and a brass toothbrush-type claening brush. When I got about 2 inches of the chain clean and was thoroughly disgusted at the lack of progress, I decided to try a little dab on a rag to see if it would dissolve the fiberglass.  It didn't seem to soften it up any.

Given the fact that the tank, while very pretty on the outside, was unuseable with the thick coat of sludge inside, I decided to experiment with it.  I went to Wal-Hell and bought some corks, the biggest carton of BB's (6000) in the store and two bottles of Berryman's B-12. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as the old saying goes.

When I got back to the casa, I poked through the mung with a stick to clear out the petcock holes, then I dumped about 3/4 the carton of BB's and 1 1/2 bottles of B-12 in the tank. Then I started shaking.

Well, I wasn't shaking, but I WAS shaking the tank full of BB's and B-12. I shook, and rotated, and shook, and rotated, and shook some more. If you'd seen me you would have thought I was practicing some funky Fandango. I shook the tank until I REALLY WAS shaking!

When I got tired, I dumped the BB*B-12 solution. After a BUNCH more shaking to get the BB's out of the tank, I went for the water hose and flushed it out with water for about 10 minutes. I dumped the water, and shook out one pesky BB that was still rattling around in there and held the tank up to the sun to take a look. The results were pretty amazing.

The nasty spooge that was coating the bottom 1/2 inch or so of the tank was totally gone.  The only remnants were a little bit of brown staining in the very corners.  It looked so good, I decided that I'd write this post in case anyone else out there in Pentonland had a case of the tanks mung and no cure.  The tank looks so good, I felt bad putting the grungy, crud coated cap back on it. BUT, that's another story!
