I got my '76 GS 250 all put together and found out that it won't shift gears. It is stuck in nuetral. I bought the bike as a rolling chassis and the motor was intact. I thought I might get lucky and find out it's a simple fix. (Reality will probably be alot worse). Can anyone shed some light on the problem. Thanks alot, John A

I have found a few things to be common to your problem.  One is the kickstarter spring has come loose and gone through the tranny, two is the shift actuator arm is worn beyond limits and won't allow the tranny to shift.  Either way, you have to split the cases and investigate.  Hopefully it is something simple.  Get a shop manual and read it first.  The 75/76 engine manual is one of the best as it covers problems not covered in the 73/74 era and also provides some extra checks for the tranny!  Good Luck

Thanks for the help. I suspected I'd have to split the cases, a bad nightmare came true. Fortunately I have the manual. Thanks again and have a good one, John A
