For the first time in a very long time I had to deal with transmission problems. And as it has been the last couple of years I have found help and encouragment right here. Thanks to all that have helped me in the past. I could not be riding again with out you!
Yesterday BigMac and I opened up the transmission on the 400 to see if we could figure out what was wrong, As Jon said, 'the worst thing that could happen is that we find nothing wrong'. Ie we could not tell why it was shifting or not shifting the way that it was. But the worst was and was not realized. As we were spitting the cases  we heard this jingle and we both knew that something was not right and with it came a glimer of a smile. Once the cases were open it was easy to see what the problem was.... On the shift arm there is a piece of metal that curves around the shifting barrel and it had broken off. I looked closly at it and found several gouges and other marks that indicated to me that it had been bent a time or two. No wonder I was having shifting problems. Jon had a spare one and we installed that. We did take a bunch of time and look over the rest of the transmission but saw nothing that looked like it could cause the damage to the shifting lever. Maybe someone abused it some where in the distant past.  It will soon be back together and ridable once more. Due mostly to friends like Jon who labored over my bike for more than six hours yesterday afternoon and evening. Thanks big guy I owe ya!

Big Mac

you're welcome...just as long as that motor doesn't walk all over my 400 when it comes to race time. And as soon as I get a chance to break a few things, I'll be hitting you up for parts for repayment.

Let me know how (or if [^]) it shifts when back in the frame.

Jon, If my bike beats ya, it will not be because I have a faster bike which I doubt. as far as I can tell mine is stock with the exception of being 2nd over on the bore. Yours on the other had is well anything but stock. We shall see at longview in a couple of weeks.
