Poggers,
Any of you good people have a spare 73-74 style RED Hare Scrambler airbox that they are willing to part with?  I'll pay a fair price.  I am trying to get a bike ready for Teddy Landers ride in April.  Any help would be appreciated.;)

Mike,

There is a red airbox on e-bay right now. The picture does not show the top so I can't tell if its for a frame breather. Take a look

Hi Mike,
You building another 250 or is this for your current bike ?? Think that ebay red airbox is for a 72 Berkshire so I doubt it will work on your bike. I'm thinking about doing Teddy's ride. Give me a call when you have a few minutes and we'll talk about it.

Chakka,
Yes, I did see that one on ebay.  I have one laying around from a Berkshire but,  don't think they are quite the same size.  What would the difference be on the top of it for a frame-breather or non-frame-breather?  Thanks.

The difference would be that if the one on Ebay is for a 72 Berkshire it will have 2 threaded holes at the top used to mount a steel cover that keeps debries and water out. The fiberglass around the upper opening is also different. On a bike with a frame breather set up it is much more defined and a bit lower. That allows perfect fit with the foam "gasket" that gets sandwiched between frame and airbox. I might have a 75 250 box downstairs, I will check. Other members can correct me if I am wrong but I believe all airboxes for frame breather bikes are universal in fit. The only difference being color. That is of course until the GP frames came out in 76.

Chakka  You are correct, the boxes are the same size with the only difference being color.  I have a 73 125(early) that has a early non frame breather air box that has been sanded down (from the factory) on top to fit the frame breather frame!

Chakka & Kip are both correct, but I have had air boxs that came off the 73,74 &75 that just did not fit up right without some work.  The point I am making is if you are going to go to the trouble of building a great bike with a new painted(or powder coated) frame and painted or polished airbox PLEASE pre-fit all the parts prior to final assembly.  You may think this is a small item, but I was ready to final assemble a show bike, for a show the following day, and the airbox (which was correct) just didn't fit properly.....again just a heads up[8D].

Good point Ron,

Its wise to do a pre-fit of any items like that before final install. Another thing that helps when installing an airbox is to position it in the frame and hand tighten the top screw just enough to get some threads in. Then put the lower screw into the frame side. With both hand tight, I then alternate tightening until locked down. If you position on escrew and tighten all the way your box will never fit, the fiberglass work was just not that precise. On my 76 125 some items I have had to tweek for proper fit. Rubber splash shield on airbox, brake lever bushings, stearing head stops. Floow Ron's advice and test fit!

Kip, I suspected the factory probably did that. It seems like what ever was in inventory got used, modified and installed. Makes it really hard when building a specific year bike to be sure it is accurate.

If you can't find a red one, I've got a white and maybe a blue one in my shed, both need some work but you can have one if you need it.

Thanks for all the responses and good advice.  Seems like I have just about every color spare airbox except the red one!  I'll keep looking.

Mike,
I have a true red box from a 74. It is not in prime shape, but useable. I have to retrieve it from my storage unit.
