Rhymes with sound it makes when it hits the trash

Okay, so I pulled the BING off (1/26/127 and I still don't get the last numbers) my little green friend.  Thoroughly cleaned and adjusted it, wrapped it up in newspaper and put it aside.  The other day I pulled it out to see if a new jet would fit, it did.  Then I unscrewed the choke assy. and found that the rubber gasket/seat turned to mush - like thick black tar and it boogered where it seats.  Of course I have a couple of questions:

-What could cause it to turn to mush? It was pretty clean to begin with and I didn't use any harsh chemicals, just soapy water.

-Does the choke area ever get wet with gas?

-Why couldn't I replace the rubber gasket thingy with a precisely cut piece of leather of the same thickness?

Peter,
Not sure how to answer without knowing who messed with the carb before you, but here is what I suspect.  At some point someone cleaned the carb with chemicals or gas and didn't take the choke assembly out or missed the rubber gasket which retained the chemicals and ended up in the condition that it is in today.
As to using leather I never have, but I used to use it on old Gas Pumps (1920's models)when I was restoring them and never had a problem....that is the way they came from the factory.  I am sure you can get the part in question from a supplier or Bing.

Peter,
I have rebuilt them with a neoprene washer and some gasket paper. We used a leather Hole punch on the washer and gasket paper. . Held everything in place with Yamabond. when you remove all the old material you should see a small lip on the pistons edge. Add enough gasket paper to make up the difference in thickness between the neoprene and the original part. The hole punch we used gave us a plug that was large enough in diameter that it had to be walked under the lip on the piston. We made one for a 125 2 years ago and its still holding. I had to have a bike ready to ride the next day or I would have waited and had Bing send me a new one.
I found that on all the 100/125 carbs i have looked at that were original , the material was soft and almost like wax. I think its just age on what ever was used back then to do the sealing. We were careful cleaning out the old material from the carb Body. blew every thing out with air. Made sure the passages were open and clean. The homemade one works fine but it would have been better just to get one from Bing chuckle chuckle!!!!
