KTM Part Numbers

Did KTM ever add a zero to their part numbers as I recently purchased a bearing sleeve from Jim Aim motorcycles for my 78 swing arm and the part number on it was 540.03.032.000 but the KTM part number from the manual is 54.03.032.000 and if you search internet part suppliers for the manual part number, no returns come back, but if you add in the extra zero to the 54 then you can get a price!

Has anyone else had this or know if this is the case [?]

My assumption may be wrong, but in my 1980 chassis parts manual, most of the part #'s have the extra "0" in the part #. A friend also gave me a part # from a late 79 chassis parts book with both the 2 digit 1st # and one with the "0" added. I would guess this was a way of determining the new part # listing changing in or around 1980.

In 1979 KTM added the 0 to the 1st set of numbers on their parts. In most cases the part is the same. Here is an example:
KTM 250, 400 Kickstarter Shaft
1978 Part number is 55.33.021.100
1979 Part number is 550.33.021.100

The important thing to remember is the order of the numbers.
The first two (or 3) number ID the type or size of the bike. Like 51(0) means 125, 57 means 175, 54(0) means 250 and 55(0) means 400. Although some parts are used on all or more than one size.

The next two number indicate what part of the bike or engine it refers to. Examples:
33 = kickstarter / gearbox
31 = carb / ignition
32 = clutch
10 = rear wheel
09 = front wheel and so on.

The next three number indicate the actual part which usually is the same as the number on the illistration. Like the above KS shaft number is 021 and that is the number on the illistration in the parts manual.

The last three numbers are the part number modification, with 000 meaning it has not been modified. I am sure there is a rule for the last three numbers like 100 vs 001, but that I don't know.

So to break down the part number for the KS shaft 55(0).33.021.100
55(0) should mean 400cc, but it was the same number used in the later 250's as well.
33 refers to the Kickstarter partion of the engine
021 refers to the part number and the number on the illistration
100 is the mod number.
