Okay, I guess someones got to post something new here... Its been over 24 hours since anyones posted [?]:(.
If you repair a leak in your fiberglass fuel tank ,  will the repair leak unless you paint it or What ???
I got 3 tanks that leak, and no knowledge of fiber glass repairs

Hi Gary, One of my tanks, I managed to stuff the petcock back into the tank :(.  The other one just has 3 superficial leaks/ cracks.
I bet theres a few other poggers that will respond to this situation.

Ray,

I too have never had any success at patching tanks.  So if anyone can document the proper procedure for doing this it would be helpful.  My current rides are leak free but its only a matter of time before a tree jumps out in front of me :D

I repaired a Six-Day tank and no leaks so far. I even had to remove petcock stubs from the tank because they were loose. You gotta use epoxy resin though to hold up to gas. I bought fiberglass repair kits a marine store. Worked well.

Lew is right on the money. I used West System brand epoxy and hardener on a Hare Scrambler tank that was ruined. It worked great and is super easy to use. They sell resin and hardener with ratio pumps so one pump from resin = one pump of hardener. Perfect ratio every time. I will post some pictures of the process and explain.

Step 1. I removed the decals and sanded the tank with a random orbital to show spider cracks.

Step 2. Open up spider cracks with a grinding wheel on a dremel. Don't cut through, just break the surface of the gel coat.

Step 3. Seal tank with one coat of West System on exterior surface, sand smooth.

Step 4. Fill cracks, voids, gouges with a mix of epoxy and Micro Ballons availible from West System. These make a great easy to sand filler. Sand smooth and prime....you are ready for your topcoat.

I have even fixed holes in gas tanks with this product. Just get some fiberglass tape, wet it down and slide through the fuel opening untill it os over the hole. Allow to dry, repeat with a second piece and fill from the outside.

I will post pictures later today
Hope this helps
Chris
