250 Penton/KTM Clutch Plates

Are there any available sources for Penton/KTM 250 clutch plates for 73-77? I have a 74 1/2 250 that is badly slipping the clutch, running ATF, and another 74 250 engine that Gary Ellis and I have used all of the useable clutch plates in my Drag Bike Project engine. The part # for the 7 discs are 54.32.011.250 and the 8 flat steel discs are # 52.32.009.100

  Have you thought about checking the clutch plates that are in the engine that went with the Kenny Robert Flat Tracker?  In addition I will see if any of my buddys have any spares.

I was holding off on that in case you wanted the engine, depending on its condition. If there are no sources for new clutch discs, has anyone tried to send them to someone like Barnett to have them produced? Mike

According to my Repair Instruction book, the 250 clutch discs are 2,75mm thick and the 400 is 2,50mm thick. I have 3 or 4 NOS 400 clutch discs, but not enough to build a 400 clutch pack, and I need as many 250 discs as I can get for 2 bikes currently.
The flat steel discs for a 250 are 1,50mm thick and the 400 flat steel discs are 1,00mm thick.
If I can come up with at least 1 NOS 250 disc and one of each 250, & 400 flat steel discs, I would see if Barnett would like to produce them, since they offer other vintage bike clutches. Mike

Hey-sus, talk about things to be done, I have the following to do:
Attend the Nats at Two Rivers this w/e "Trials" and dig out the Patriot to honor Jim Pomeroy with our friend Corky Root. Ship 4 side panels and MC5 decals to Mike Husted in OK City for the RR, oh but if you knew how busy I will be, then after that, re-assemble the "bagger" on Sunday so I can relax and enjoy the changing Aspen....
Would it be worth it? you can bet your money on it

Mike Winter, for your enjoyment, there is a very good article re:clutches, written by Bobby Lucas in the Fall 1999 Issue #4 of Keeping track. He denotes plate thickness:
125, 175, 250  MC organic at 3.5 mm, my deduction, is that these plates are the newer organic angled plates that spin the oil away from the inner hub
250 Enduro plates, of brass, rectangular tabs, are 2.5 mm in thickness
400 Enduro/MC plates are 2.0 mm with shorter springs and 1.0mm steel plates indicating a larger clutch pack in general.
In short, I am not an expert re: clutches...but there is a good amount of information.

EMGO can have any clutch plate reproduced for us but you have to order thousands each.  I was willing to do hundreds but cannot afford thousands.  Pretty reasonable prices, way cheaper than anyone else as I checked it out at the dealer show earlier this year.  Al considered going along on this but currently spread too thin on other purchases.  I also checked Metzeler on tires for vintage bikes, normal markings, i.e. 3:50x18, 3:00x21, 4:00x18, but they didn't want to talk unless you were ordering thousands each.  All it takes is $$$$$ but it can be done!;) My hat is off to anyone having parts made for us, it gets pretty expensive!
