My Father N Law bought a new penton MC and put it in storage in 1981, So we decided to get it out and make a christmas gift for him.
I was supprised this thing is in exceptional shape, But, I know nothing about these bikes, so here it is, can anyone enlighten me.

S/N: 54601 88125      Orange Penton with White Fenders.

Still turns over, has spark, everything is there except the head light, Must have been taken off at some point, even has the leather tool pouch and tools on the tank.

I am looking for some direction on what to do, I would like to fix this up and give back to him, but, do not want to ruin any value or quality of the age by restoration, The fenders are a little yellowed from setting, however, under the seat the rear fender is perfectly white.  They had emptied the gas out when they stored it, Thankfully.

I would appreciate some knowledge.  I don't have any problems doing the work I just want to do the right thing.
Thanks,
Jaybird

Jaybird,
You have come to the right place. These gentlemen are a vast storehouse of knowledge, and have been am immense help to me in putting my Six Days together.
I would suggest clicking on the "Production Years" topic on the home page and giving it a good read. This helped me to understand the timeline better and the differences. Also a help with the frame and engine numbers.
Good Luck,

Jaybird,
It looks like you have a 1976 Cross Country Enduro Penton. I have a 250 and just picked up a 175 with the same frame date. My most complete one is a 250 and is missing the lights as well, but the wiring harness for the lights and the rear brake light switch is still intact. If the engine number stamped above the ignition cover starts with 6-54, then it is a 250 or if it is a 6-52 it would be a 175. These Cross Country Enduros have either the long travel 35mm Ceriani forks with a rib running down the front of the fork sliders, or possibly 35mm Marzocchi forks with the offset leading edge axle. There are many great folks on this site that can offer help and advise on how to return your fathers bike to its former glory. Good luck with your project. I have a couple of black and white file photos picturing the Cross Country without the lighting and a couple of POG members bikes that Kent Knudson emailed me that may be helpful in your restoration. Welcome Jaybird, it would be great if your Penton just needs cosmetic/ tune up type attention, but if cleaner and elbow grease don't git r done you certainly have the best resource available here for the more mechanical issues.
