'77 400 Head and Cylinder

In order to "free up" a stuck motor on my '77 400 GS6 project, I need to remove the head and possibly the cylinder. I think I can get the head off without much trouble but does the motor have to be taken out to remove the cylinder?

The topend on the KTM comes off without pulling engine, however if it is stuck having the motor out will help a lot in your efforts to set it free.

What position is the piston in (near bottom, middle of stroke, near top)? If it's mid-to-upper stroke, you can just pour in some WD40 or Liquid Wrench, let sit a couple of days, slip a wooden dowel on top and give it a pop with a hammer. I know I was able to do this with my Honda 305 without hurting anything. (The rings were already shot).
