Hello guys, my name is John Hubbard, and I am Potomac vintage Rider club member in the Mid-Atlantic region. First, I'd like to thank you for letting me be a part of this forum.

I just seriously started racing vintage CC last year, and must conclude that it's been an absolutely great venue, and I'm really looking forward to racing again this Spring. Hoping to meet some of you at the Nationals in WV, and NC.

My current steeds include a 1979 Maico Magnum E GS 250, 1981 KTM 250 GS (Rik Smits old bike), and a 1984 Husqvarna WR 400. I just recently sold a very clean and recently resurrected 1980 Maico Mega 1 440 MC -- it had only 2 hours on it. I like the woods way more than track, but will be mixing it up a little on my 84 Husky and 79 Maico this upcoming weekend at Budds Creek just to get the cobwebs cleaned out.

Here's some pics:

I've been reading this message board for the past 6 months and am very grateful & thankful that it's here, as it is a very valuable resource.

So if I may, I would like to pose this question. Recently I pulled my KTM out to get ol' boy ready for the Spring. I was putting around the yard and all of sudden the kickstart pin fell out -- of course it was no where to be found. Well I contacted Helmut "Speedy" Clasen and he didn't have it in stock and stated that I should bring it to a good machinist and perhaps they could make a replacement. Well it's been 2 weeks since and I haven't heard from the machinist, and what I'd like to know is in the event that he's not able to machine a new pin (12mm dowel) what alternative (save for jump starting it) kickstart levers could I use? I contacted Al Buehner and said he didn't have any replacement lever for a 1981 KTM and that they were hard to come by. Would anyone happen to have any one lying around that they would like to sell?  Or, would anybody have a good source for locating an entire kickstart lever assembly?

Here's the schematic (part #38 is what I'm looking for) link I received from Speedy:

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated! Thanks again for letting me be a part of this forum.

If you never got out of the yard, and the pin was there when you started, go to a supply place and get one of those "magnet on a stick" ideas. Then just kinda drag or sweep it along your track. It sounds dumb, but you'll probably come up with it, and a bunch more metal parts that you didn't know were out there.

John,  Welcome to the group.  Looking at the KTM drawing, it appears that the dowel would be easy to make.  Check with your local industrial supplier and ask for 12mm drill rod.  Drill rod is precision ground and hardended -- Precise and durable.  Good luck.  See you at the races!

Hey JC where did you get the Husky tank decals? Are they the kind with holes, so they don't bubble? Thanks Jon

JCHubbard

Donny -- I sent you the payment via paypal. Thanks again -- and I'll definitely keep you in mind when looking for NOS parts.

Jon -- I got the decals for the Maico magnum and Husky from here:
http://www.mxm.co.uk/

It took about 2 weeks for them to arrive from the UK, but it was well worth the wait.
