Ok, I have read the AHRMA rules and the ISDTRR rules from the past events and it seems to me that if I equip my 1978 KTM 400 MC5 with lights/spark arrestor/speedo/license plate the bike would be eligible for the post-vintage open class.  Looks like some 1978 KTMs have entered in the past.  Does this seem wrong to anyone?  The AHRMA rulebook does contain a waffle phrase that basically says, for cross country events, the rules might be different for every particular event on the calendar.  I can afford to wait and see a little bit but I am trying to figure on whether to prep and ride the MC5 or Harescrambler in a couple events this year.  Many thanks for any guidance you can supply.  An open question for me is whether the 400 will be manageable on the trails but I'll know that long before October.  Best, John

The MC5 bikes are very good on trails.  The 78 has some MX weaknesses because it goes up against longer travel bikes in GP class and on rougher courses in Cross Country because it goes up against single shock Ultima bikes.  It is a good turner but if travel becomes a factor it lacks against these other bikes.  It will get by just fine and you will have a blast.  In the end it is the guy turning the throttle that wins or loses.

As far as the 400 motor goes just short shift it and stay out of the meat and it does good in the woods.

Larry, I really appreciate your insight.  I will get the MC400 prepped and have a go at it! Regards, John
