...would like to replace the transmission/crankcase oil in a '72 6-Day (Sachs engine) and Jackpiner (KTM engine). Can anyone tell me what the preferred oil and oil viscosity are?  Hopefully it is the same specification for both engines...

Thanks-

tofriedel

ATF works for both bikes.

I like Belray Gearsaver.  The non-hypoid kind.  More expensive but does not have to be changed as quickly.  Both are very good, though.  Just my preference.

ATF Dextron III oil will serve excellent in both bikes. It has been a long time since I poured anything else into an engine. And it will likely never happen again.

Thank you to all who replied...one more question though...Any preference for draining the oil through the drain plug or by removing the clutch cover?

Randy Kirkbride

You better remove the clutch cover to drain the oil or you could easily strip out the drain plug.

Plus you can clean out any sediment better with the cover off.

Should I remove the clutch cover on the KTM engine as well or only the Sachs engine?

Thanks-

Larry Perkins

I myself, don't find it necessary to do that on the KTM motors.  Just the Sachs.  The KTM motor drains from the ignition side, NOT underneath.

Thank you Larry and to all who have submitted their advice.
