Tank Strap "Fitment"

I put my freshly paint MX tank on my 75 KTM the other night and started to put the repro tank strap on, but man the hole that goes around the filler spout is a tight fit!  It seems like I have extra space in the front, but can barely get the back part over the lip.  

Are there different tank strap for different models/years?  Can I trim the back part and still have it look nice?  Thanks for any help!

I cannot speak for everyone on this subject, but if those tank straps have been off of the bike for some time, they shrink.  Not always the same shrinkage on all parts of the strap.  

I put mine on and tighen it down, in a couple of days it fits ok.  You may want to dampen the leather a little bit to assist getting it to fit properly.

It's a brand new reproduction tank strap from Al B.  I was thinking about trying to stretch it, but I didn't want to ruin it.  Thanks!
