When Sachs and Husqvarna began to use the Motoplat ignitions as OEM systems, the production numbers went up signifigantly and unfortunately, the quality of the systems dropped due to the production numbers. In January of 1974, Motoplat completely redesigned the systems that were used on the Sachs, Husqvarna, KTM, and many other brands. The major design of the system, was to take the diode out of the stator assembly and moved it to the coil/CDI module. The quality of the production and the ignition components rose very well from that point and if the grounding of the system was done properly, the systems were very high quality. If the grounding of the stator and the coil was not done well, then the ignition could die very quickly.

There were a number of systems made for many different brands of motorcycles, some were designed for clockwise rotation and others were for counterclockwise rotation. Since Penton Imports made some of the Penton machines with the Hiro engines, which used a counterclockwise Motoplat ignition, there were some of these systems in our inventory. And when Hi Point began to provide the Motoplat ignitions to the Japanese engines, we also purchased a number of other Motoplat ignitions designed for counterclockwise rotation, both internal rotor design and some external flywheel designs.

Today, Penton Racing Products, Inc. still has a number of the counterclockwise, external flywheel magnetos still in inventory. Recently, I was looking at these mags, and was wondering if there was a way that the counterclockwise stator assemblies, could be used on the Sachs, KTM, and Husqvarna engines. And after putting the stators on a Sachs engine and a KTM engine, they actually do work!

There are some different mounting points that have to be done, but technically, these stator assemblies have been working just a good as the clockwise rotation stators. There are two major points that have to be done. The magnetic field of the flywheel has to be reversed and the stator has to have a different timing hole drilled into the stator. When the stator is mounted to the stator plate, the wires are in a different place, but they will stay away from the flywheel OK.

So, if you still want to use the Motoplat magneto on your Sachs or KTM engine, then you can purchase an OEM Motoplat stator from Penton Racing Products, Inc. The Motoplat flywheel has to be sent in to Penton Racing Products to have the magnetic fields reversed and the new stator will be installed.

There is one issue in regards to the lighing of the Motoplat systems. There is only 35 watts for the headlight. If you need more wattage for your lighting system, then you need to go to the Powerdynamo (MZ-B), because they have 70 watts. The only issue about the Powerdynamo system is that the flywheel is a little tender compared to the Motoplat flywheels.

The retail cost of the stator will be $165.00 plus the return shipping. We also have coils that are designed for the Motoplat magnetos as well.

Dane do you have to use the different coil with this? Thanks Gary Ellis

Gary,

You can use the early red wire Motoplat coils or the "late black wire" Motoplat coil or the PVL replacement Motoplat coil.

You can not use the early, black wire Motoplat coil.

i have one of these on my 250 harescrambler. i was going to take off the pvl anyway to gain a little more flywheel wieght. it works great. starts right up and its a little less flightly from the added wieght.  its another, less expensive, alternative to having to replace an entire motoplat ignition. thanks dane for coming up with this.     chi jer

The new OEM stators will not work with the early coils that don't have the diode in them. If you have the "red wire" coils or the last black wire coil (with the large terminal close to the wire) then they will work.

Maybe a longshot but do you have any idea if these would fit a Bultaco Frontera?  Has points right now and is left-side flywheel.  I'm guessing the crank might need to be modified if it is even possible at all to fit these.  Thanks!  John
