Politics, Religion and Pre-Mix

The old saying goes "dont talk about Politics or Religion" but off road riders know you can add pre-mix to that also. This came up recently because Mobil 1 discontinued their two stroke oil and several people I know are trying to pick a replacement. I've known lots of people have great success with Yamalube R, Honda's 100% synthetic, Golden Spectro, Bel-Ray and any number of other oils. One of my cousins had a modern YZ250 loose all its coolant and ran so hot that it melted the radiator hoses, but the engine never seized, they were using Mobil 1. I think now days it is actually pretty difficult to find a bad oil so long as its not Wal-Mart outboard oil or something.

Having said that, I use Maxima Castor 927 and I mix it at 32:1. I've used it since the early 80s and have never had any problems with it, except the one time I forgot to mix oil in the gas. [:o)] People say not to use it in a bike with an exhaust power valve because it will make it stick, but mine have always been clean. I think the vegetable based oils like 927 and Motul 800 are especially good in the high temps that aircooled engines run at, which are much higher than any water cooled bike gets too. Ernie asked me to do a compression test on my 100, it had 150psi last year when I did the top end. After 6 MX motos and most of a seasons worth of CC races, I'd guess about 20-25 hours of racing, its still got exactly 150psi and I've flogged the bike as hard as I could so its not like its been ridden easy.

Now, I'm not saying everyone should use Maxima 927 just because I do, or any other oil for that matter, people should use what they like. I just wanted to add some real measured data to the pre-mix discussion for those interested.

Hi Brian,Don't you worry-The soon to be u.s. government mandated tofu based 2 stroke oil program will be put into effect soon!Mixed at the epa mandated 300 to 1 ratio it should burn really, really clean.Of course if/when it seizes, you will be eligible to turn in your old 2 stroke "clunker" for a $5,000 govt. credit towards a new $30,000 epa, dot, irs, chp, ama approved battery powered green trail machine.Properly set up hi performance versions will go as long as 18 minutes between battery charges. And if/when we get hurt on our bike don't worry, socialist health care is a comin' too...Oooops almost forgot religion-thank God our goverment is looking out for us!Just Kidding[?];)

P.S...Sorry for the lame attempt at humor-(probably not funny in times like this).BTW-Yamalube R at 32 to 1 has always worked great for my bikes.

If you like Maxima 927 ,  I suggest Maxima Super M.  Doesn't have the "SMELL" but it burns much cleaner.  Dick Liechen once told me that he would have discontinued 927 if he could have gotten the Castor smell into the Super M oil. I use at 40:1
Another good oil is Opti2.  Many mix it at 100:1 but I use it at 80:1.

Dwight, I've read where Dick said that in interviews too. I've used Super M too and its great stuff, but the main reason I use 927 is very few dealerships including mine stock Super M, while almost any dealership in the country will have 927. You never know when you might need to find some oil on the road.

My God is a Republican and let's me use Honda synthetic in my 81 CR250R.How's that for including all the taboos in 1 sentence? :)

Brian, I too use 927 with "The Smell" and love it. I run it in all my 2 strokes including my 2006 KTM 300. I've yet to replace the top-end yet alone need to clean to Power Valve. My modern bike riding buddies are always asking "What the hell are you burning in that thing????".

I mix it at "about" 40:1 which converts to about 3oz per gallon, which means: "EZ for Pete to remember".;)

I have better things to worry about than oil these days.

Always being open minded,I fell in 1962 at my FIRST ISDT,to the offer from OPTIMOL WERKE MUENCHEN,to use there oil at 50-1.I got hooked and used it up to 1969,when OPTI came to CanadaUSA,und told me"now you can mix it 100-1."[?]
Being "OPENMINDED",I tested it and got hookt again.:D
Since then,it is the only oil in my shop.:)
About the other NO-NO,..Lets say,I have seen the World,I dont have to see the " LIGHT".:D

Enough sayd ???????
