I am in need to buy a sachs 125 6a-6b-6d engine in good running order, Would like to buy a complete engine with electrics and carb to finish my DKW project. Thanks for any help Randy

DKW / Hercules / Sachs also work well with a 100cc engine. It is the shorter wheelbase that makes it work better.

Hi Guys,
A little off topic, but I just came a cross an old article (Popular Cycling Nov 1972) where Herb Uhl "Idaho Bike Imports" offered a service to cut and extend the main backbone of the Sachs / DKW frame to add wheelbase (it also lowers the engine 3/4") vs only lengthening the swingarm.
It is supposed to improve handling and high speed stability (probably slows the steering down though).
This mod adds wheelbase length without making the bike front-end heavy, like what would happen if you only lengthened the swingarm.
The gas tank and seat mounts are moved forward and I imaging the front cradle has to be extended as well (the article doesn't mention this).
I'm a pretty big guy (6'1") and building a Sachs 100/125cc (haven't decided which size yet) for AHRMA motocross, I might not look so big on it if I did this mod.
Any one ever heard of this or tried it?
Thanks, Ron

I have that article as well but suggest not doing it. I had a DKW in the day and raced desert. There never were any high speed stability issues with the stock frame. What there was were constant visits to the welder to keep all the cracks in check around the head tube. I think that modifying the frame would not result in anything better and cause undo stress as well.

Socalmx,
Thanks for your response and experience, much appreciated!
Did you always ride a stock frame? No extended swingarms?
What kind of shocks did you use front and rear, back then?
Curnutts? What length?
I've gone full circle [:I], now I'm back to riding 100's and 125's, finishing without getting hurt is my only goal, not counting aches and pains. LOL
Thanks, Ron
