I am finally getting around to building this 1974 250 and started to install the new bearing races in the steering head. I was going to do the install as I have done with seals, bearing, etc ie a big socket and a hammer! I then thought... I may deform the race with my old methods. Any thoughts or experience to help this process???

Freeze the outer race, place on steering head, lay block of wood across race and bump into place with deadblow hammer!

If you have a pre braced steering head Penton with tight steering head bearings consider yourself lucky. Most will fall in [and out] with ease. Ive had to heat most and form the race tight again. In 74 I welded a piece of flat stock wraped around the lower race bearing to brace it. I suggest you do this if you will be racing it in the intermediate class or above. the 75's came with this same type of bracing.
