Sorting out a 74 250

I finally got my 74 250 Penton back together and was able to take it out for a short ride between rain hail and snow showers today. ( I hate March) Anyhow I was kinda disapointed in the lack of low end power. While climbing a pretty steep hill it seems you  have to scream it and if you fall of the pipe it will just bog and not pick up rpm unless I grab the clutch. Just seems to me like it should have more than that to work with powerband wise but this is my 1st 250 Penton.
I am running the stock Bing and have it geared with a 12cs sprocket and a 52 rear. The pipe is suspect as someone welded on a non stock stinger to be able to attach a Supertrapp muffler. I do have an Ace pipe ordered but haven't seen it yet. Hopefully it will help with the low end power.
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Sam

REPLACE the needle jet and check the slide for the smiley face.

I have seen guys replace stingers on pipes with different OD and length and kill the powerband.
Might be one place to look

Listen to Larry and replace the needle and needle jet, EVEN if they look good. A properly running stock 250 Penton has loads of torque and should not have to have the clutch slipped very often.

I had carb problems too on my 79.  Larry and Brian nailed it!  It was in my posting

Bing Carb Type 54-2 Jetting Issues

Do a search on it and I list all the Bing part #'s I had and what I ended up with.

The bike works perfect now.  1st kick starter and idles perfect and revs through out the whole range.  I haven't even changed the plug since I've finished jetting it.

Now, granted your settings may be different.  But I am very happy with mine.

Thanks for the info guys...
I knew I could come here and get some useful info. Larry by smiley face I assume that you are talking about wear on the slide? Yes it does show some but not enough to feel...
Garrett thanks for the search referral .. I will work on sorting out the jetting. THat will give me a good starting point.
Bob I was thinking the same thing about the pipe stinger so I am looking forward to getting the new pipe from Ace.
Thanks

Sam - may want to double check your manual for the starting place to go back to. For 74 250 with Bing 36, I believe it's 165 main, 40 pilot, 283 needle jet, #1 needle, clip in middle groove. A non-worn / no smiley-face slide is very nice if you can find one or you stumble into a reasonable priced version for sale, but new from Bing, they cost about the same as a new Mikuni. Jet for the rest, hope for the best--don't sweat a smooth idle and perfect pickup off the bottom. A worn slide makes no difference at half-full throttle!

Thanks for the info Mac.. You are correct with the  jetting as that is what is in the Bing I have. Upon further inspection I noticed that the slide is worn more than I figured however so I have decided to go with a Mikuni conversion. For me parts are more readily available for the Mikunis. Thanks for the help

I went through a bunch of carb issues on my 76 400.  After spending much more $$ than I was comfortable on the original Bing, (and dealing with a condesending jerk at the Bing Agency) I decided to spring for a new Lectron.  Man, that Lectron sure works well on my old Penton.  It wasn't cheap but the bike is soooo much more ridable than it ever was and as a bonus, it starts within one or two kicks hot or cold.

I had a similar experience with a KTM 250 I had way back converting it to a Lectron carb. The Lectron cured all the problems I was having and made it a different bike. If I could find a Lectron for a reasonable price I may go that way but for now I will try the Mikuni. At least I can get Mikuni jets semi locally so that is a plus for me.
Sam

My bad[:0] ... I did a google search for Lectron carbs and it looks like they are still in business. I should have looked more I guess. I am not sure if they are AHRMA legal howver.

Larry Perkins

In AHRMA the Lectron is only legal for PV bikes and not Vintage.

I was having some issues like that too and I put a Mikuni on my 250 and it not only solved the problem, I got a bunch of low end to boot.. and mikuni's are legal.

Larry,
I think we should start an old Bing Society to take care of the Bings that no one wants....

Good idea Ron.

We could call it Bing Rescue & Rehabilitation Authority Patrol or BRRAP.  Our motto could be, "They may be misunderstood but they HAUL ARSE better than a Mikooti!":D[:o)]
