Rear Shocks?

Hey guys.  You might remember me from a while back.  I'm working on a 73 berkshire to give to my dad on fathers day.  Well, that plan got scrapped because I had to have surgery on my left shoulder and wrenching on a bike is not an approved activity during recovery...[]  Guess I'll wait until his birthday in November!

Anyway, since I'm currently on disability and bored out of my mind, so I'm searching out the final pieces.  I'm currently looking for rear shocks for the bike.  I want them to look correct on the bike and I've seen some posts about progressives series 12 (or something like that), and works shocks.  Which one looks more correct?

Would some of you who have these shocks installed be willing to post a picture of them on your bike, or E-mail them to me?  If it's an off the shelf item, could you also provide the part numbers too?

Works Performance shocks do not look correct, for an original.

what "series" progressives are those?  Also do you know the part number?

Hey Randy, your JP looks to have a bracket in the center of the left side number plate.  How did you do that?  I'm always bending (and now slightly cracked) that part of the plate because my knee bends it in when I lift the bike on a stand.

That's a stock bracket on all the 72-74 cmf. My 75 doesn't have that, but it has the cut-away plate for the forward mounted shocks.

Some enduro riders "back in the day" used to cut the number plate off & make the airbox cover a triangle then cut the bracket off of the frame & grind it smooth.

This gave you quicker access to the airbox out in the woods, and made the bike easier to clean.

Number plates weren't needed in enduros. The lighter & cleaner a bike could be - the better. We used to take off everything that wasn't absolutely necessary.

Will the bike be ridden, and if so raced or just putted around?

If you plan to ride at anything but poking around in the yard, you need the Series 12 gas shocks, part number 12-1203B and spring number 03-1387B. However, while these shocks are original looking, they are not the most original looking, that would be the non-gas Series 14 shocks, part number 14-1283B and spring number 03-1321B. The Series 14 shocks look the most original of anything out there, although they dont offer the 13.5" anymore, only 13" and 12.5", but they can NOT be used for even moderate trail riding, they will blow the seal.

Kurt sorry about your shoulder. That stinks I know.  If you want something very original but perhaps not so effective/modern you could try searching ebay for "Koniking" who restores and sells Koni shocks.  Konis are what came on my 72 Jackpiner and my 74 Harescrambler.  I think before that Cerianis were OEM.  If you were to search this very forum for koni and ceriani shocks you will find a lot of info.  If you wanted to see photos you might check the photos section of the site especially the penton anniversary display photos because I think some very smart people here decided to line up the bikes in year order so you can find a few photos of your bike and year.  Good luck!!  John
