Has anyone come up with a LED type headlight and taillight for 6 vt bikes ?  You wouldn't need a Voltage regulator with those.

Mike Hufnagel

I am running a led tailight on my TY250 (1157 bulb equivalant). Haven't had any problems with it. And it's a 6v. Of course the brightness coincides with the revs.

I'm also running an Acerbis dual headlight/number plate (non led) on the front. (looks like two side by side flashlight lenses). No problem there either. Can see pretty good at night too.

Dwight I think Vance Smith has figured all this LED stuff out ... If he dosent chime in,   drop him a line ....BT ( ISDT 75 )

I experimented with using 12v led bulbs in the 6v tail light of my PE 175 and found one that worked really well. I had to try a few before I found one that worked.

Doug,
What is the big secret, don't you want to tell us what it is?  I too would like to try one in my 1983 PE 175. :D
 Thanks much,

There is no big secret. I just looked on ebay for festoon style bulbs in the size range that is on my 78 PE 175 and ordered a few different styles that claimed to be the brightest. They would all work, but the one that seemed to be the brightest looked like a circuit board with a couple of yellow dots on it rather than a glass tube. Since the 78 pe headlight and tail light run off the same circuit the headlight runs brighter because the led taillight is using less amps. I was also able to splice in a brake light on the same circuit because of this. 12V incandescent festoon bulbs will also work on the PE 175 6v tail light, but used on the same brake light set up they would make the headlight dim every time you hit the brakes.

Doug,
Thanks for the information.  I now know what the name of that style bulb is called.  I will give them a try and see what happens.
Thanks for sharing.  You have brighted my day and night.
 Thanks again,

The secret is in the resistor used to make the voltage aprox 3.3 volts.
Any voltage more that 1/2 again higher and it burns out just like a bulb. A 6 volt system uses aprox. a 150 ohm and a 12 volt sysem uses aprox. 470 resistor in series.
With this info you can then get into arrays in series and parallel. I have taken many a burned out bulbs and when heated the glass will come loose leaving a very handy base socket. You can fit a few LED's in there and solider in a resistor and make your own LED lamps. To help out use the LED Wizard at this site:

 http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

I hope this helps and it will allow more current to go to the head light for better lighting on those 6 volt systems!

Dwight:
Check out Super Bright Led website.  There is a section for other voltage than 12v also.  The site has about every bulb known and even had ac voltage leds that work with landscape lights with small wedge base. Here is the link:

Some LED will not work on AC voltage.  Most will but will be 1/2 as brite because they alternate off an on at the ac cycle rate.  You can add a simple m 4 wire bridge rectifier that can be had on Ebay for about 3 bucks and then you can use dc Leds.

Hi,

we use 6 VDC LED bulbs from Aidlite, Taiwan on our Hercules. They're excellent and have a bright light, but you need to take care that the maximum DC voltage is below 6,8V. Otherwise they will die very, very fast. Therefore some electronic LED life insurance is a must.

We developed a charging regulator for standard 6 V batteries to receive a faster charging of the battery, due to less power drop inside the regulator compared to the original Selen rectifier, and limit the maximum battery voltage to 6,5 V.

Additional we're currently in production of a special blackbox that will be fitted between the dynamo and the LED bulbs (6 VDC) for bikes without any battery. The blackbox cracks down high off-load voltage (Motoplat up to 150 V) to protect the LEDS and provides them 6,5 VDC.
This will be fine for LED backlight, speedo buld and LED headlight (Daylight).

Guenther,  How much for your regulator ?  I am building a Dual Sport bike out of a 1979 Yamaha TT500 with optional lighting kit.
