Funny you would mention that Jeff. I was thinking the same thing. That is close to the position on my Trials bike as well.

Check out the August edition of Trail Rider magazine at //www.trailrider.com.  Nice editorial at the front about Jim Hoellerich's place, a synopsis of all six days of the Dalton ISDT, and a "human interest" story (if you can call it that) by yours truly about being a kid in '73 in New England.  Support Trail Rider!  They've supported the ISDTRR since Year One.

Hey, if some of you folks are thinking about a horn, I just got this one. Works great and you can't beat the price and free shipping. Much better than a sqeeze type horn and water-proof.

Here's another product I just ordered to add to pklinck's list for quieting the fins down. I'm running a 73 Husky that has a lot of vibration and motor noise.
Not sure how politically correct this is for you folks, but I do a lot of hunting with archery gear. These things are unbelievably effective at quieting down a bow to a dull thud upon release. I'm going to try them on the bike.

Steve Erickerson,

If I understand it, "fresh packing in the muffler" in a way is like saying do not clean out your muffler until after the sound test??  I was thinking of cleaning out the muffler but maybe i'll wait.

Gordon, I'm running a 73 husky also. I have rubber fuel line between the fins and rubber tube straps around the head. I also packed the silencer. I'm hoping this will get me by. The bikes not real loud but probably not at the 96db.

I will venture to say - if you go back 40 years, the 48th ISDT and having the U.S. Trophy Team on Pentons. HAS to be the single biggest event in the history of the Penton motorcycle !!
If you have a Penton between July of '73 - July '74, it most likely wore this sticker proudly on the tank strap.

Rob,

Thanks for posting the photo of the 1973 Ohio State Championship race at Lexington. I helped pay for the trophies at that event. On the first lap of the 100cc class, I popped several spokes out of the front rim of my bike after jumping the drop off before the roller coaster hills. I thought I had a flat tire because the front end was wobbling. That ended my racing for that day. At least I got to hear my name announced to the crowd before the start of the race.

Al, it's so cool that you were actually in that race with me!!!
Hey guys, with the help of Dale, I was able to track down Mark Outland thru his brother Kevin .  I wanted to reach out to him since us two are the only ones still living (in that '73 result). Both Kevin and Mark were super nice and both glad I found them.
Life is short. Play hard!

From the looks of the sign up sheet at Pathfinders, looks like POG will be well represented, see a lot of you signed up for this ride.  I'm ready, got the beast all tuned and cleaned.  Looking forward to meeting lots of folks in person that I only know online in this forum. Hope everyone has a safe trip out this way.

Those look to be some really nice mounts for that Preston Petty headlight -  where'd you come up with those?
