Old Works Shock Mounting Positiion

One of the Penton projects I'm working on came with a set of what I am told are early Works shocks. They have black shock bodies, with 5 cooling fins, and are a gas shock, The body assembles at the rod like a Curnett shock. I think I read somewhere while working on  a set of Curnetts that Works Performance was founded by a former Curnett employee. My question is, do these shocks mount up right with the gas section on the bottom, or upside down? My local guy seems to think they should mount upside down, but would like some other opinions.

Pop the springs off and stroke the shock. Unless they have a piston to separate the oil from the gas they can only be mounted one way.
In the correct position the damping will be constant. Otherwise the damping will feel jerky.
